Services

Although stonemasonry skills are traditionally used for conservation and restoration work, they can also be applied in a variety of settings, from hard landscaping and new builds to interior work in both modern and historic settings.

Conservation

T J Ferris Stonemasonry offer our services to everyone looking to preserve and protect historic buildings whether  Conservation Architect, Trusts & Bodies or private clients. With a wide range of in-house skills and a select group of specialist suppliers providing everything from initial specialist Consultancy services through to the complete delivery of complex Conservation and Restoration projects.

Restoration

We have a rich history in restoring heritage properties across the whole of the UK. Projects range from the complete restoration of Grade A structures and listed buildings to dovecotes, churches, bridges, chimneys and estate walls.

Hard landscaping

Our stone masons can implement stunning designs, creating beautiful additions to any garden. From boundary walls, patios and driveways to meandering walkways, raised flowerbeds and ponds. We regularly undertake projects for stone paving, kerbing, pillars, steps, patios and arches. We have over 20 years’ experience in restoring exterior stonework to its former glory or creating new build hard landscaping projects along traditional lines.

Dry Stone Walling / Dyking

Whether forming structural or decorative features for example drystone facades, retaining walls, pillars, steps, seats, tables, drystone BBQ’s, drystone bridges the only limitation is the imagination.

Interior Services

We also work in a more modern setting, providing high quality workmanship to bring stone, marble and reclaimed wooden and architectural antiques into new houses and buildings. From fireplaces to marble bathrooms and stone walls our services enhance the design of new properties. We will consider any inspired ideas: a client once asked us to convert a number of pews recovered from a church into a library in her home to great effect.

New build work

Ensuring that new build work is in keeping with its historic environment, we undertake all types of structural alterations and have a proven track record in completing sympathetic new builds including extensions, conservatories, garages and porches. We also undertake all chimney work, dig and lay new foundations and build concrete block foundations and facing brick work for new build projects.

Lime pointing

Lime mortar allows buildings or walls to breath either through the pointing separating the masonry or a render coating.  Over time, however, lime mortar will deteriorate and need re-pointing to ensure that buildings are weather-proof. The team at T J Ferris Stonemasonry has extensive experience in the re-pointing of lime-built walls and buildings, having served apprenticeships and attended training courses with the Scottish Lime Centre.

Stone and Masonry Repair

Comonoly a blend of Lime, fine aggregate filler and additives forming various brands and specifications of conservation approved stone repair mortar designed for use on natural stone and period brickwork. It is extremely versatile and can be matched for colour and finish to almost any masonry.

Sub-contracting

T J Ferris works with existing sub-contractors in a collaborative and respectful way. We can also recommend sub-contractors for specific projects where additional skillsets are required. These include joiners and specialist carpenters, glaziers and designers. Those we recommend produce work of the highest standard and uphold the same standard of customer-focused principles we follow ourselves.

I have commissioned both small and large stonework projects from the firm and I have always been impressed by the quality of the work. I would not hesitate to use their services again.

Built a new porch on the front of the house . Foundations, block work walls and traditional timber roof with slates. Happy with finished building.

Thomas completely replaced the platform at the top of my Colony steps, repaired some of the steps, repaired the walls on either side and repointed the walls along the pavement. Everything was colour matched to fit with the original steps and I’m delighted with the final result.
Thomas and his workers were really great, friendly and polite and worked so hard to do everything just right. Thomas kept me informed every step of the way, was very thorough when finishing off and made sure everything was tidied up. A very positive experience!

Prompt, friendly and business like, Thomas checked out, assessed and estimated for repair of a dangerous broken step at the bottom of our common stairwell. Ahead of schedule and, at short notice, he resolved our problem to everyone’s satisfaction. TJF Stonemasonry is local to the Canongate and we would be more than happy to avail ourselves of their splendid services again. Highly recommended.

I’ve known of Tom Ferris and his work for some time. I have used him for private work on my property – which this review covers – but as a Trustee of a Grade A heritage property in the Borders, I have recommended and used him for work on that elevated level of craftsmanship. I have also seen his work on at least three other Grade A properties. I regularly recommend him to Boards of Trustees and private individuals who own heritage properties. He worked for me on a private project, creating a curved wall as part of a new remodelling of an area of my property. He produced a result that is frequently praised by those who see it for the first time.
