Tom Ferris

My father is a master joiner and builder with a passion for stonemasonry which he passed on to me. After helping on his sites from a young age I took to bricklaying like a duck to mortar, but quickly learned that stone was the finest material on site, requiring a great degree of skill and offering a huge variety of work.

While working with my father and brothers restoring old homes and building new ones, I completed an apprenticeship in banker and fixer masonry at Edinburgh College.

In 2014 I started T J Ferris Stonemasonry to focus on projects that offered new challenges and experiences in the field. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength working on variety of buildings and structures including some of the finest estates and homes developing our skills and expertise,  and applying these to each job we undertake.

In 2015 we restored Ayton Castle’s Dovecot, the oldest structure in Ayton leading to a contract on the castle lasting for years, later we undertook major conservation work to Coldingham Priory which is the oldest building we have worked on and very historically important.

Whether undertaking an extension, walled garden restoration, new build home or the conservation of a historic church we take pride in our work and respect our clients and their buildings. Through developing strong relationships throughout the industry and wider community we aim to improve the image of construction and develop cleaner more responsible practices.

The Team

We employ a core team of skilled stonemasons who are at the top of their game professionally but are also friendly, polite, hard-working and tidy. Sometimes we supplement this team as and when required for larger commissions. Everyone who works for us is highly skilled, reliable and trustworthy and shares our passion for authentic craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.

The client journey

From your first contact with us, right through to the completion of the project, we prioritise client experience and satisfaction. An initial site visit and quotation comes with no obligation then once a project has been agreed, we provide a clear plan of action together with a timeline for the completion of works. Communication is key and you will be kept informed at every stage with regular updates and meetings when required.

Mission statement and values

We believe that every building has worth, whether it is a Grade A listed historic monument or a modern home. Every project is valued and we bring the same level of professionalism and care to re-pointing an entire castle as we do to restoring the fireplace in a town house or creating a dazzling modern bathroom.

Our primary objective is to deliver customer satisfaction and we have built our reputation on exceeding expectations. We aim to deliver all projects on time and on budget but, if there is a reason the plan has to be changed it will be done in consultation and with as much advance warning as possible.

With an office in Edinburgh and yard in the Scottish borders, we work across the whole of  South East Scotland and North East England. We have, however, worked across the UK and even in Europe for specific projects. Please enquire if you would like us to work outside this region.

We carry all relevant insurance policies to provide assurance that we and our clients are covered for every eventuality.

We stand by our work and will always endeavour to take any steps necessary to ensure the enduring quality of our work. In addition, we use the standard Scottish Building Contract (SBCC) or equivalent, offering a minimum 5-year cover which can be extended to up to 25 years depending on the situation and complexity of the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, T J Ferris is VAT registered.

Yes, we will undertake projects of any size or level of complexity including smaller projects like adding architectural antiques or new stone work in a new build.

External stone masonry is weather dependent, and frosts and winter weather can potentially damage the mortar if it has not had time to set before the winter, unless full covering can be provided, we are limited to the months of better weather and would usually advise that work does not start until the risk of frost has gone.

Cutting and dressing stone for upcoming projects or bespoke orders, dry stone walling, hard landscaping and many other building services continue through the winter months.

Internal projects can also go ahead in the winter months but this will depend on the amount of external work which needs to be included.

We usually have at least two months of work ahead of us at any given time, so that would be the minimum lead time for large projects. We do however often fit in smaller works at short notice. It is best to discuss the timing of the project at the outset and we will do our best to fit in with your timescale. It is always advisable to plan ahead as far as possible so that we can book you in and arrange the best time to start on the project.
