Charterhall Walled Garden

One of the many large estates in the Duns area of the Scottish Borders lying 35 miles South of Edinburgh.

An irregular-plan walled garden containing a sundial and tennis court set to the SW of the house.

Rebuilding of Victorian garden wall using lime mortar and bricks reclaimed from original wall.

This project was a true test of our grit, one many stonemasons would not entertain . Having to remove a hard mortar from over four thousand bricks by hand was not a process I would relish repeating. Mechanical methods were not possible without damaging the bricks, however the end results more than justified our labourers.

One element we particularly enjoyed was building the wall back into the end still standing strong but, on a lean, giving a pleasing curve to the join.
