Lime Pointing

Historic stonework relies on the interconnected pore structure of lime mortar to ensure that water and vapour can pass through the wall. Cement mortars or inferior lime mortars simply cannot do this effectively. Over time, however, lime mortar can deteriorate and needs re-pointing to ensure that buildings are weather-proof. The stonemasonry team at T J Ferris has extensive experience in the re-pointing of lime-built walls and buildings, having served apprenticeships and attended training courses with the Scottish Lime Centre.

Built a new porch on the front of the house . Foundations, block work walls and traditional timber roof with slates. Happy with finished building.

High quality work.

Tom and his team recently finished a number of stone and building repairs at my house and I cannot recommend them enough. The job was complex yet Tom and his team provided me with a comprehensive estimate and plan which was followed through keeping us in budget. The craftsmanship was first class and Tom’s team were professional, courteous and tidy throughout. I am delighted with the results.

Thomas completely replaced the platform at the top of my Colony steps, repaired some of the steps, repaired the walls on either side and repointed the walls along the pavement. Everything was colour matched to fit with the original steps and I’m delighted with the final result.
Thomas and his workers were really great, friendly and polite and worked so hard to do everything just right. Thomas kept me informed every step of the way, was very thorough when finishing off and made sure everything was tidied up. A very positive experience!

Thomas and his team removed cement mortar from a couple of elevations on a cottage. They then repointed using lime mortar. A brilliant job with minimal disruption. We have dry houses now! I would happily use Thomas Ferris again.

Very happy with work completed on a listed building to repair damaged stonework around a window and preventative work to redress heavily weathered pointing.

Thomas and his team were a pleasure to deal with and were very professional during the work. The finish blends very well with the existing stonework and I would have no hesitation commissioning TJ Ferris for any further work I required or recommending them to others.

Very happy with the work done by Thomas and his team. The work involved some plastic repairs (lithomex) to my tenement wall to fix an area of stone that had delaminated and crumbled away. It was quite an awkward spot to get to as the access scaffold had to be built on another flat roof and the repair itself was high level, just below the gutter line, but they done a great job and got it sorted despite some very windy weather. I would recommend to friends and call on them again if the need arises.

I have experience of T J Ferris Stonemasonry’s work both in repair and new stone build. The quality of their workmanship is excellent. They have built a new stone wall for me personally and we are very pleased with it. They have also repaired our Georgian garden wall. TJ Ferris Stonemasonry have undertaken repair work, at a competitive cost, on the Category A listed ancient monument of Coldingham Priory – treating 13th century stonework to reduce porosity and repairing Victorian weathered sandstone.
